Mathematical Properties - September 7th, 2009

Dear Members of our learning community,

This week we have begun a discussion regarding several mathematical properties. Please write a letter to your friend who is attending another mathematics class and teach him or her about two of the properties you learned. Please provide a specific example for each property you chose to teach your friend. Also, please determine whether the commutative property applies to subtraction and division. Be sure to justify your answer. This assignment is due Friday, September 18th, 2009 by the close of business.

Have a pleasant weekend.

Sincerely,

Ms. Budney

  1. Dear Mike,

This week in math class we learned about the multiplication identity which is one because anything times one is itself. I was concerned because there are so many properties to remember.

I think the commutative property does not apply to subtraction because 5 - 3 is equal to two and 3 - 5 is equal to negative 2. As a result, when the order is changed the results are not the same.

  2. Dear jamaine,
this week in math class i learned about the multiplication identity. the multiplication identity is anything you times it by is one and also you can times it by itself which is one. Another property that i learn is the distributive property which is Summing two numbers and then multiplying by another number which is the same value as multiplying then you add them.

  5. Dear Joey,

This week in math class I learned how to add and subtract numbers with negative signs. When adding and subtracting numbers you have to be careful because it tricks you. Say you have a problem like - 2 + 4. I bet you are guessing the answer is -6. But your answer is not correct. This is how you do the problem.

Step 1: You can try drawing a number line which is good but is not always going to help you especially with big numbers.

Step 2: When you draw a number line you label it from -4 to positive 4.

Step 3: Start a -2 and then count four places to the right. Your answer should say 2.

  6. Dear Oxwell,

My day in school was amazing. I learned all kinds of things. In math class I learned about the additive inverse which means any two oppposite numbers added together equals zero. Example: -7+7 = 0. Also, I learned about the multiplication identity, which is to multiply one to another number and you will get the same number you started with. Ex.: 1,000 x 1 = 1,000.

  7. Dear Laura,

This week I learned in Ms. Budney's math class or in math class two new properties. The first one is called the additive inverse which is being defined by two numbers that when is being added together equal zero. I will put an example so you can understand much better. So my statement will be negative eight plus eight will equal to zero. Example: -8 + 8 = 0. And by the way this equation could be applied to the commutative property having the order of the numbers change but the result will stay the same. The other property I learned in math class is the mutiplication identity. It means one times anything gives you what you started with. Example: 36(1) = 36. This equation could be applied to the commutative property because if we multiply 1(36) = 36 we will still get the same answer. Example: (12)(4) = (4)(12).

Hopefully you will write me back.

    Sincerely,

    Kenia T.

  8. Dear Friend,

I wanted to let you know what I learned this week and it is that the commutative property works for both addition and multiplication. For example: 5 + 9 = 9 + 5 that is addition and 5*4 = 4*5 that's multiplication. Subtraction does not work in this case because if you do 6-7 that is -1 and 7 - 6 is 1. The main point is that you will get two different answers.

  9. Dear Daniel,

I wanted to let you know th that i learned this week was the different kinds of propperties like addtion, subtraction and all that Ex: -4+4=0. Also i learned how to solve perimeter, it is easy than you think you just need to add all the side up and know how to put where the numbers suppose to be.

  10. Dear friend,

this week in math class i learned that additive inverse which means any two oppposite numbers added together equals zero. For example
29+-29=0. another thing i learned was commutative property. Communative property is when a set of numbers equal te same no matter what order they in.

  11. Dear Amber
Today in math class we learned new things which was kinda tricky for me in the beginning but then i learned that sometimes taking the easy way out in math means you really dont learn anything. In math we learned about things like Associative property and Commutative property. Associative property is where whatever in the ( )changes its order but the results are the same. An example would be (8+12)+10=8+(12+10)
    20+10 = 8+22
    30 30
Commutative property is where the state of where the number is changes but the results stay the same. An example would be
    7+5=5+7
The reason i chose these to as an example of what ive been learning in class was because there very similar when you think about it. I hope you understood this as well as i did and good luck in your math class

  12. Dear Nicole .

Well these couples of days in math class havee been great . We learned alot of new things that we didnt learn last year in math Class . We have learned Commutative property which is 4 + 3 = 3 + 4 . What im Sayinq is that we learned alot of new things and Ms. Budney is doing a good job teaching us and explain us the problems more .

  13. Dear Ash

Today in math we learned about perimeter but with expressions its really hard sometimes I need the teachers help when I forget how to solve the problems like 2n+2 length of the rectangle and the width is 3n+1 which algebric expression can e used to represent the perimeter of the rectangle the anwser is 10n+6 but i got it wrong i wrote down 7n+3. Im learning math really well in this class

  14. dear steve ,

a few days ago i learned alot from math class. a propetry called "additive property" is when you add a number to zero it will always be the same number. for example 0+4 will be 4 because anything plus zero is the same number as the one you just added to it.

  15. This week, I learned many kosas Ms.budney the kind of learning is to find the distance around perimeter.Perimeter (add all sides). I have to add all the sides and then gives me the most is the outcome that perimeter

  16. dear whoeveryyouare,

the commutative property does not work with subtraction and division because when u subtract a number to another lets say: 2-3 it will equel -1 but if u put 3-2 its 1, this means that commutative property does not work with subtraction or division.

The multaplicative idenity is when you times a number times 1 and it equels the same number for example 4*1=4.

  17. This week in class learning Ms.budney to solve and check. if I have to solve a problem to leave x alone. chequia order after I replace all the x with the result that gave me the problem. and when I check to see if there problemama is right or wrong.

  18. The property that i am going to use is additive inverse.additive inverse is when you have two numbers and when added it equals to zero. -2+2=0
